RETERM - Thermal
Engineering – Notes for Authors
i) PURPOSE AND POLICY
The purpose of the RETERM - Thermal Engineering
Journal is to publish papers of permanent interest dealing with
research, development and design related to Energy, Equipments,
Oil and Gas.
The journal is divided in two sections: i) Technology
and ii) Science. The Technology section comprises articles that
document modern engineering applications or general advances in
industry. The Science section is intended for publishing articles
that deal with fundamental advances in heat transfer and fluid mechanics,
new physical insights, and novel experimental and analytical methods
that have great appeal for the industry community.
Submission of full-length scientific, review or
technical papers to RETERM implies that it is not under consideration
for publication elsewhere and it has not been previously published.
Exception is made for papers previously published in proceedings
of conferences. Review articles should constitute a critical appraisal
of published information.
The decision of acceptance for publication either
for the Technology or the Science section lies with the Editors
and is based on the recommendations of at least two independent
referees and of the Editorial Board, if necessary.
ii) SUBMISSION
All manuscripts for RETERM must be written in
clear and concise English. The submission of a manuscript may be
carried out only by E-mail: The file, preferably in Word for Windows,
with the full manuscript (including figures) should be sent to reterm.abcm@gmail.com
or vargasjvcv@gmail.com.
Other file types, such as Open Office or Latex files could be accepted,
but a delay in final publication should be expected.
In the e-mail that sends the manuscript file,
the authors should indicate to which journal section the paper is
intended to, i.e. Technology or Science. The e-mail should also
contain the full name and postal address of the corresponding author
and his/her phone, fax number and e-mail address.
If the authors so wish, the names of up to five
persons who could act as referees may be indicated.
The authors should retain a copy of their manuscript
file since the journal cannot accept responsibility for damage or
loss of paper files.
iii) MANUSCRIPT PREPARATION
The manuscript should be organized in the following
order: Title, authors, affiliations, abstract, keywords (3 to 5),
nomenclature, main text (divided into sections and subsections),
acknowledgements, references, and appendices. The tables and captions,
as well as figures and captions should be appropriately distributed
into the main text.
The abstract should state the objectives, methodology
and main conclusions in up to 300 words. In all papers, sufficient
information should be provided in the text or by referring to papers
in other journals, to permit the work to be repeated.
Manuscripts should be typed according to the template
file available on the journal internet site http://www.demec.ufpr.br/reterm/autores.htm,
in order to comply with RETERM’s format since the very first
submission. The pages should be numbered and the full length of
the manuscript including tables and figures should not exceed 10
pages.
iii.1) Units and Symbols
The use of SI (metric) system is mandatory for
all reported data. Temperatures should be given in °C or K.
Uncertainties should be specified for experimental and numerical
results.
The nomenclature section should list, in alphabetical
order, all used symbols and their definitions, followed by, if applicable,
Greek symbols, subscripts and superscripts. Besides, all symbols
should be defined within the text.
iii.2) Mathematical Expressions
Mathematical expressions should be produced by
an equation editor and should not be introduced along the text itself,
as part of a sentence line, but typed on individual lines. If you
are using Word for Windows, please type equations with Microsoft
Equation 3.0 only.
Numbers that identify mathematical expressions
should be enclosed in parentheses located at the right margin of
the paragraph. Refer to equations in the text such as in “…as
derived from Eq. (1)…”, or, if at the beginning of a
sentence, “Equation (1) indicates…”.
iii.3) Figures and Tables
Photographs, charts and diagrams are all to be
referred to as, for example, “Figure 1, Figures 1 and 2, or
Figures 1-5” in the beginning of a sentence, and “Fig.
1, Figs 1 and 2, or Figs. 1-5” in the middle of a sentence.
The figure label should be text centered underneath the figure as,
for example “Figure 1. Problem sketch.”. The table labels
should be text centered on top of the table as, for example “Table
1. General rate of annual mileage.”.
Figures should be clear and suitable for reduction
(up to 50%). The amount of lettering should be reduced as much as
possible by transferring it to the figure legend. Remaining lettering
should be large enough to be clearly legible.
Figures and tables, with a suitable caption, should
be numbered consecutively in the order in which they are referred
to in the main text. Footnotes to tables should be typed below the
table and should be referred to by superscript lowercase letters.
Refer to figures or tables in the text such as
in “Figure 1 shows…”, or, “…in Fig.
1 it is shown…”.
Please note that color figures or tables cannot
be printed in color. However, they will appear in color in the journal
website.
iii.4) References
Cite references in the text by giving the last
name of the author(s) and the year of publication: either “Recent
work (Prata and Parise, 1985) has indicated...” or “Recently
Prata and Parise (1985) indicated....”. With three or more
authors, use the form “Prata et al. (1985)…”.
When two or more references have the same text identification, append
“a”, “b”, etc, to the year of publication.
Acceptable references include: journal articles,
dissertations, published conference proceedings, books, accepted
articles if the journal is identified, and private communications.
References cited in the text should be listed,
in alphabetical order of the last name of the first author, at the
end of the paper. Some sample references follow:

Heat Exchangers, McGraw-Hill Book Company. (for books)

iv) AFTER ACCEPTANCE
Upon notification of acceptance, authors should
submit an electronic copy, preferably in Word for Windows, of the
final corrected version of their paper via e-mail (reterm.abcm@gmail.com
or vargasjvcv@gmail.com).
The formatting of the final paper should follow the RETERM publication
standard template, which may be downloaded from the journal website
http://www.demec.ufpr.br/reterm/autores.htm.
Please note that accepted papers which exceed
the standard length of 10 (ten) journal pages will be subjected
to an excess-page charge of US$ 50.00 per page for each page. This
charge will be invoiced to the author’s company, institute,
or agency, as indicated.
One journal printed issue is sent to the first
author of the paper free of charge. Additional printed issues can
be ordered from RETERM (reterm.abcm@gmail.com)
and will be charged according to: 25 extra volumes (US$ 100.00)
or 50 extra volumes (US$ 180.00).
For inquiries related to the submission of articles
(including electronic submission), the status of accepted articles
or other inquiries, please contact RETERM at reterm.abcm@gmail.com.
v) COPYRIGHT
The authors, or the first author on behalf of
all authors, must sign the “Copyright Transfer” agreement
before the article can be published. This transfer agreement enables
RETERM to protect the copyrighted material for the authors, without
the author relinquishing his/her proprietary rights.
The copyright transfer covers the exclusive rights
to reproduce and distribute the article, including reprints. Authors
are responsible for obtaining from the copyright holder permission
to reproduce any material for which copyright already exists.
